Altitude
How do I prepare myself for
the altitude?
Altitude primarily signifies a lack
of oxygen. At a height of 5,500 metres, only half the amount
of oxygen is available for breathing as compared with sea
level. Not everyone can cope with this in a similar manner.
Age and gender don´t play a role, but a good state of
health does. For this reason and if one plans to make a trekking
tour, then one should go to a highly experienced doctor for
consultation and undergo a physical examination. Specific
tests to check altitude suitability and fitness do not exist,
nor do preparations to adapt oneself to altitudes. Although
a generally sound physical condition as regards to endurance
and stamina training doesn´t actually have any direct
effect on adjusting oneself to alti-
tudes; nevertheless after having success-
fully acclimatised, it enables enjoyable and trouble-free
daily excursion stages.
